Youth Of The Month

Last night (April 30) Betty Tubbs, Club member and lifeguard, received the WCD Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year award at a banquet in Elma, NY

The WNY Collaborative of Boys & Girls Clubs (12 Clubs from Jamestown to Rochester) hosted the event which recognized 9 Youth of the Year and 7 Rising Stars.

Betty will also be recognized at our annual awards night here at the Club on Monday May 20.

  Here's why Betty was chosen:

Betty has been a member of the Winifred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls Club since 2011.  During that time we have watched her grow into the beautiful, capable young lady she is today.

Betty began her participation in the Club as part of our Project S.A.F.E. after school program.  She attended almost every day and participated in a variety of programs.  Since 2011 Betty has attended our Club over 2040 days.  She’s been a part of many of our prevention programs including S.M.A.R.T Moves and S.M.A.R.T. Girls.  She has also attended Summer Day Camp Hiak Tilikum.  Betty has also been part of our mentoring program

She enjoyed participating in all of our sports programs including basketball, soccer, flag football and floor hockey.  But her most attended activity was swimming.  She loves being in the pool.

In August, 2021 Betty participated in our lifeguard certification program.  In October, 2021, we hired her as a lifeguard for our facility.   She began as a shy, hesitant fifteen-year old who is now a competent, capable lifeguard who is loved by all our patrons.  The adult swimmers even recently invited her to lunch with them and they are still talking about how much they enjoyed getting to know her better.

As an employee Betty is extremely conscientious about her schedule and duties and has been trained in a variety of program areas as well as a lifeguard.   We can always count on her to come in and help when someone calls off.

Betty did very well in school and even graduated early in January 2024.  She is planning on attending Jamestown Community College in the Fall to fulfill the prerequisites needed to apply to the radiology program at the college.

Betty is an excellent choice to represent our Club as our 2024 Youth of the Year.  Her positive attitude and desire for excellence in all she does is exactly what we want our members to work toward.
